Who are we?

Northern Rascals is a multi-disciplinary company based int' Yorkshire. Together, we are passionate in creating thought-provoking dance theatre that is both beautiful and relatable and taking it to a wide variety of audiences. We believe that the power in performance art is truly magic and something to be experienced by all. Our company and its collaborators endeavour to achieve this at every opportunity, in fact our work is entirely about the people involved. No matter how far our imaginations run wild, they always end up coming back to you!

Our Story

Northern Rascals was founded by Anna Holmes and Sam Ford who first met whilst training at Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Coming from Croydon, Sam was struck by Anna's Northernness and Anna by Sam's Rascallion tendencies and hence, 'Northern Rascals' was born.

Initially commissioned by The Brewery Arts Centre, we created our first duet ‘2 Peas’, a work that has toured nationally, most recently as a part of International Dance Festival Birmingham. Since then, this innovative and emerging company has gone from strength to strength.

Our ACE funded project ‘Dearest Daisy’ performed at Bramley Baths, sold out to local & industry audiences. NR was awarded the judges prize for ‘Like Rumours of Hushed Thunder’ by SLAP at York Theatre Royal & shortlisted for ‘The Hodgkiss Award’ for ‘The Gallery of Fools’ by The Royal Exchange, Manchester. We are currently in the development of our new ACE-funded, family production ‘The Mesmerist’.

The company have also had the pleasure of developing a strong outreach programme, teaching the next generation of Northern Rascals around the country. From primary school to universities to our oldest participant at 80 years old, we have opportunities for everyone! Please check out our 'Opportunities' page for more information.
