      <image:title>Blog - A Year In Review - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>We began the year coming full circle, an end at a beginning, by performing our final theatre show of SHED at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, the place Me and Sam met and really our story together began. I remember the days as a 13 year old when I began training at NSCD that I would dream of performing on that stage, never mind having my own professional show perform there - it was surreal. Yet, when the moment comes, as is common with this industry, I knew what was coming next - and it really was beyond anything I could’ve hoped for 2024. My best friend kept saying to me, 2024 is your year. And It became a phrase that I would repeat often in my head. A kind of manifestation of sorts. I don’t know what powers were at play, but it has felt like, after 7 years of nonstop graft, the gains have started to come through - and I guess, she was right. 2024 was wildly successful for us. And in that breath, I feel the the desire to undercut that statement, to acknowledge the dire state of the arts, to stand in solidarity with our peers who are receiving rejection after rejection, to supplement our success with a but. However, one of the joys of this year has been working with Natalie as a wellbeing support and I’m working on not using BUT to minimise. 2024 has been wildly successful AND incredibly long coming. February brought the beginning of Reviving Her. A project that has spanned most of the year and began a series of firsts. The first time we’ve been commissioned by our local council, the first time we’ve received that large of a grant from ACE, the first time we’ve had 6 dancers in a studio for a creation period that lasted 13 weeks. It was no mean feat, and it was safe to say that everything scaled up and with that, we had to step up too. At moments, I thought that I would burst with the responsibility that we had. There were 26 people relying on us, at least 10 of which we were providing a substantial chunk of income for them for the year. There was the responsibility to get the funding, but then of course to deliver a project that was worth of 6 months of their year. To work at this level, whilst creating the script and narrative arc that was based on partly autobiographically on my own experiences, meant I was pushed beyond boundaries that I didn’t even know I had. Often in those moments, the fear is real. I’m a perfectionist, I have a deep desire to deliver to the highest standard. I understand how scarce funding for the arts are, I understood the chance that had been taken on us. And failing just wasn’t an option. In those moments of doubt, sometimes I wish I was a stranger to my self. That I could crawl out of the layer of indecision that surrounds me. What if? What if? And and and and and. This year has been a year of deep introspection, and to share this on a live stage, wasn’t something that I had prepared myself for. I was so consumed in getting the show up and running, getting the script done, keeping the business moving - that I was completely taken aback by the audience response to Reviving Her. With a show that was deeply personal, I somehow observed it in a way that felt removed. The trauma of Reviving Her is not extraordinary, but I guess that’s where the success of our work lies. It’s in the everyday, the unspoken broken norms that most feel and understand. Artistically, the show was a success. Practically, it had its difficulties and it put a strain on us that we hadn’t experienced before. With the next step up comes the understanding that to run at this scale in a sustainable way, we need more support, more money. (NOOOO more fundraising!) I thought we’d get to this position and finally feel comfortable, but now we need more hands on deck than ever before. And whose hands they are, has never been more important. This year brought the unexpected joy of remounting SHED on a new cast and going on a rural tour. An experience that I think changed our opinion on our industry forever. Bringing Northern Rascals to life has not come without sacrifice, and stress is no joke. The physical and mental impacts have been deep, but that’s a blog for another time. The rural tour brought a way of working that was so bloody good for our mental health. It drilled back into us the importance of connection, particularly with those strapped in the van beside you. This year we’ve employed between 30-40 freelancers, some of which we’ve just met and others we’ve been working with for 7 years. These deep bonds, this deep respect is so vital to the success of not just our work, but our industry. The end of the year brought funding to remount Sunny Side and to tour it in Spring 2025. It’s been a year since we last worked together and luckily, I’ve never felt as connected to this group. We look at each other and we see the life that has happened to us since, and all of that, allows for such richness to bleed into the work. We respect the work, we respect each other. And though we get snagged on hand placements, and ‘Nureyev’s sweat’, the work is still there, sitting in our bones. During our first week of remount, we were joined by our mentor and dramaturg Geoff. Geoff’s role is in the questioning, the unpicking. The sky world. The dream world. The air these characters breathe, the secrets they harbour. Geoff’s notes match my own, scrawled in my notebook - our work is cemented in the hidden moments. The moments that are nuanced, hidden from the performer but revealed to the audience. The character doesn’t have to be aware, but the performer must understand. We call them our intentional hooks. These hidden moments are what the fabric of the story lie upon. The skeleton that holds the narrative. Without them, we have an audience lost. Unsure and confused, maybe self-conscious, maybe feeling like ‘it’s not for them’. A huge driving force has always been to rid that idea from our spaces, how could this not be for you - you are so deeply embedded into every decision. The hope for 2025 is that all this just continues. The year begins with connection in our local community, we’re holding a Northern Rascals Weekender in Calderdale on 18th to the 19th Jan, and then filming a docufilm for Sunny Side the following week. The end of Jan brings a brand new commission with JV2, a full circle moment for me as I was a part of the 2016-17 cohort. Starting the beginning with an ending. Again. Then we travel the company, alongside company mascot Gus (our dog), we’ll be teaching in Gloucester, Bournemouth, Cornwall, Coventry, Leeds before we embark on our second part of the rural tour of SHED, this time all across the UK, Cornwall, Durham, Wales. Then we take Sunny Side on it’s first nationwide tour. The first date is the 8th April at The Place, London. See you there? NR x</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - 2023 Wrapped</image:title>
<image:caption>Oh wow, what a year 2023 has been. On reflection, it’s been absolutely bonkers. We’ve been creating a new show, touring another, leading outreach all over the country whilst self-producing and wearing all the silly hats you’ve got to wear as creative freelancers. During that time, we’ve had so many highs, so much wonderful feedback and connections and moments that will stay with us forever. We’ve retained and made some wonderful new partnerships (shout out to CAPA College and York St John University in particular who’ve always followed through and gone above and beyond to help us). We’ve built a creative team that is full of people that we love and admire and are constantly blown away by their bloody talent (shout out to you all, we’ve held and loved and cried and laughed and danced with each other so much this year - we love you!) Amongst the highs, we’ve also had a lot of lessons, a lot of unsuccessful funding bids, a lot of stress, burn-out, time away from each other, a lot of venting and feeling like we’re busting at the seams. We’ve poured every scrap of energy that we’ve had to give it our all this year, and that means some things have had to be sacrificed. We think the greatest take from this year is how lucky we are to work and live the life we do. To live your childhood dream as your career is the biggest gift. This job/life lets us create worlds, connect with people, hold stranger’s hands after our shows. It allows us constant deep thought, deep conversation, deep connections. Small moments that matter in some way to someone. Now, we hit pause for a few weeks - we pour that love and connection into our families and friends, refill the tank and come back next year to continue. Sending love, Anna and Sam</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - An Update From Us</image:title>
<image:caption>From 2024, Northern Rascals will be leaving The Middle Floor. Since our collaboration began in Feb 22, we have taken much pride and pleasure in our involvement with the Middle Floor. Over a period of nearly 2 years, we reshaped the studio, renovated the space and created a second studio space that became the place of work for young local artists. We collaborated with the Middle Floor to set up a class programme structure including the regular Pro Classes and programmed workshops and events that helped build the Middle Floor community as we know it today. However, it is now time for us to focus our efforts elsewhere and look forward to the future. We wish the Middle Floor the best of luck moving forward. A huge thank you to everyone that supported us, to the family and friends that helped us decorate, the community that came to our classes and events and the wonderful artists that came on board with us Photos by @ellywelphotography</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - International Women’s Day 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>Hey Ladies it's our day again... I've started to document moments where I feel my most whole, my most powerful self. Capturing myself when I've hit and achieved specific goals (i.e in the pink shirt, I'm walking down a corridor at The Place as a Choreodrome Artist, I got rejected from the BA there when I was 18, an age when my self-doubt really began to unravel). I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my own personal story of female growth. One that for the past year, I haven't been able to get out of my head. For the past ten years, I've witnessed the slow yet sudden fading of my sense of self. That confident, resilient 10 year old girl has been crushed and fit into shapes that please other people's agendas. I've been made smaller, I've been made thinner, I've been made sexier, more silent, more self-conscious. I've made sorry my mantra. About 2 years ago - at my most lost, struggling through the fog of another contraceptive pill - I hit a turning point. And slowly, I've been rummaging through the rubble, picking up the pieces and dusting myself off. My whole self is being fitted back together. I'm no longer afraid. I'm no longer apologising. I'm taking my space and revealing my power happy #internationalwomensday2021</image:caption>

<image:caption>Usually at the end of the year we do an annual review of our career highs and successes and the exciting things to come in the year ahead but it feels a bit off to do it this year when it’s been so difficult for so many people. It’s the year that changed everything, and if you’re reading this, we’ve all got through it...Just. The losses have been colossal but we so hope that during this time you’ve found happiness and gratitude, that you appreciate each new day, that you hold your loved ones closer and harder than ever before. It’s all that matters. Thank you for helping us get through it ❤️</image:caption>

<image:caption>It’s difficult to round it up on this post because it still all feels really overwhelmingly present. One thing for certain is that this project, this experience, these people are special. We came together as strangers and have connected through a beautiful experience in bizarre circumstances. Pretty emotional to finish it to be honest... Amongst the highs, there were low points too. Times when people were low, or tired, or having a bad day. And the group picked them up, or lightened their load, or just understood. Social interaction is so so important. So grateful for the opportunity to work with this group on this project in these weird ass times by @ellisjrobinson</image:caption>

<image:caption>Check out Mia Lyndon (@auditionquest) blog on our recent virtual intensive. By the end of the intensive, comfort zones had been demolished, restraints had been leapt over and young minds had been challenged- with hours of original footage to prove it. In just three days, young dancers, located all across the country, had been brought together, accepted and encouraged- fuelling them with energy for the long weeks of lock-down ahead. Creativity is the blossoming force knitting the dance industry together right now, with young peoples’ ideas more relevant and valued than ever. Creating such an accessible, welcoming programme of creative inspiration, Northern Rascals’ Sunny Side Virtual Intensive ticked all the boxes. What a wonderfully inspiring and beautiful few days it was...</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Morning ☕️</image:title>
<image:caption>‘For me, the lockdown has been conflicting, a constant imbalance of freedom and frustration. Each day differentiates, at moments I’m running, taking the wild and the unpredictable in my stride; then with the smallest bad placement, the most minor of wrong footing, I stumble and find myself freefalling into the abyss of the unknown. Each day, I tiptoe the present, walking away from a past that I cannot and will not put to bed, towards a future where my dreams seem difficult to see.’ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ Check out the blog written by Anna a few weeks ago on her thoughts on lockdown for @balbirsinghdanceco</image:caption>

<image:title>News - We finished the Sunny Side Virtual Intensive…</image:title>
<image:caption>We’ve just finished our 3 day virtual intensive working with 40 young people across the UK. Right now we are exhausted. To be connected and creative and responsible for others after so many weeks of self-caring has been a bit of a shock to the system. It’s fair to say we’re feeling a lot of different emotions. Relief that it worked. Grateful for online platforms like Zoom. Frustrated at internet connections. Grief for the absence of touch. Anger that they’re missing out on so many important moments. More anger that their voices aren’t heard. Determination to change that. But most of all, just so much love and warmth and comfort that new bonds can be formed, existing bonds can be strengthened. Empathy and compassion and connection survives. We’re experiencing a collective personal suffering. In #mentalhealthawarenessweek and beyond, we’re all still here. Support. Connect. Create. Lessen the strain. Together. Oh and we made the news!</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - The Mesmerist begins…</image:title>
<image:caption>January saw the beginning of our newest production ‘The Mesmerist’. Joined by the fabulous Katy Hewison (pictured) and NSCD student Elly Welford, we delved into creating the magical world that encompasses the work. Rehearsals saw us in various parts of Yorkshire: from old mills in Halifax to city centre in Leeds and the more suburban life in York! We were joined by mentor Geoff Colman and our composer Jonathon Deering; both of them travelled across the country from the South to be immersed into the weird yet wonderful world of Northern Rascals. February begins back in York Dance Space in preparation for our premiere on 23rd February at York Theatre Royal…</image:caption>

<image:caption>The second week of January brought us to the beautiful York St John University, where we were commissioned to create a new 20-minute work on the 3rd year Dance cohort. In just 5 days, we created ‘Sparkies’; living in the world of The Mesmerist, the humorous work looks at the daily tribulations of the workmen of the mythical world. Tasked with cleaning and maintaining the precious lamps, the audience witness what occurs when disaster happens: the lamp breaks…</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - REVIEW</image:title>
<image:caption>We are thrilled to have been mentioned by the Dancing Times - Britain's Leading Dance Monthly in David Mead's fantastic review of Birmingham Dance Network 'Introducing...' "Their Introducing…, at Vivid Projects, an atmospheric converted warehouse space deep in the old industrial heartland of Digbeth, proved the most interesting evening of the three weeks. Three works stood out. Northern Rascals, a duo consisting of Sam Ford andAnna Holmes, presented 2 Peas, which follows the complex relationship between sisters. Holmes and Stéphanie Bentley made great use of a wide range of clothing and footwear as they laughed, fought and made up in a very truthful look at life."</image:caption>

      <image:title>SUNNY SIDE supporting - SCARBOROUGH</image:title>
<image:caption>Context: High male suicide rates and clear local appetite for men’s mental health initiatives (e.g. Andy’s Man Club record turnout). Limited access to contemporary dance. Financial strain and unemployment may limit disposable income for arts attendance. Marketing Considerations: Frame the show as community-relevant – a story that reflects real struggles men in Scarborough face, rather than abstract “dance theatre.” Partner with Andy’s Man Club (Scarborough group) for outreach, social content, or group attendance offers. Emphasise accessibility and affordability – highlight concessions, or relaxed performance atmosphere. Use local storytelling – feature quotes or short films from local men discussing why open conversations matter. Position as a rare opportunity – highlight the scarcity of high-quality dance theatre in Scarborough to create a sense of occasion.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SUNNY SIDE supporting - ROTHERHAM THEATRES</image:title>
<image:caption>Context: High deprivation and suicide rates; stigma around men expressing emotion. Local facilitators note persistent barriers due to “man up” culture. Demand for mental health outreach with young men. Marketing Considerations: Use language around courage and strength, not vulnerability — “real stories of resilience,” “bravery in the everyday.” Partner with local men’s wellbeing groups (Andy’s Man Club Maltby, RotherHive, community sports clubs). Offer group tickets or youth night deals for college-age men and community groups. Co-create marketing content with local ambassadors (e.g. youth leaders, grassroots mentors) to ensure authenticity. Engage schools and colleges through workshops that connect creativity and wellbeing, building a bridge to attendance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SUNNY SIDE supporting - ARC Stockton</image:title>
<image:caption>Context: Deep-rooted deprivation, high suicide rates, particularly among young men. ARC already active in mental health and community engagement. Unmet demand for cultural work focused on male wellbeing. Marketing Considerations: Align the show with ARC’s existing creative engagement programmes – position as a natural extension of their offer with Displace Yourself Theatre. Collaborate with ARC’s trusted community partners to reach men already engaged in wellbeing work. Highlight hope and community connection in messaging – “shared experience,” “collective strength.” Offer pre/post-show conversations co-facilitated by ARC’s community team to deepen engagement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SUNNY SIDE supporting - OCTAGON BOLTON</image:title>
<image:caption>Context: High deprivation and major health inequalities. Suicide leading cause of death for men under 50. Octagon has strong community reach and trusted local presence. Marketing Considerations: Emphasise the Octagon’s role as a welcoming, safe local hub, not a formal theatre space. Work with local men’s mental health charities (e.g. H.A.V.E, Start Inspiring Minds) to co-promote or run linked discussions. Use tone that feels grounded and working-class relatable – avoid overly polished or abstract visuals. Highlight the human story, not the art form – “a powerful story told through movement, about what happens when we bottle things up.” Leverage Octagon’s community networks to reach non-traditional audiences (workplaces, recovery groups, boxing gyms).</image:caption>

      <image:title>SUNNY SIDE supporting - NSCD, LEEDS</image:title>
<image:caption>Context: High male suicide rates among young men. Existing dance and creative education infrastructure (FE/HE, CAT schemes). Expressed need for safe, creative spaces to explore mental health. Marketing Considerations: Target young male dancers and students as ambassadors – invite them to see the work as part of their training and wellbeing. Use NSCD’s digital and educational networks to promote the show through peers and alumni. Host a post-show discussion or workshop about mental health in dance training. Emphasise professional inspiration – seeing male dancers perform complex emotional material can challenge stigma within training environments. Frame the show as part of a larger movement to make dance a space where men’s stories are seen and valued.</image:caption>
